I cannot think of anyone more worthy of a retrospective then the Queen of Punk fashion : Vivienne Westwood. So I'm disgusted that I can't make to Selfridges to admire a collection of her shoes ranging from 1973 - 2010. I have long been a fan of Westwood. Buying my first piece from her meant so much to me. (I bought a handbag in June)
So all I can do is give you some photos taken from fashionista.com (credit where credit is due) and a little bit of a history lesson about the lady herself.Vivienne Westwood studied art and design at the Harrow (london) school of art and design. Studying fashion design. She left the course stating : "I didn't know how a working-class girl like me could possibly make a living in the art world" She became a school teacher and took a job at a factory.
She met Malcom McLauren and opened her first shop, calling it sex in 1971 on Kings road. McLauren became the manager of the Sex Pistols while Vivienne sold punk, fetish gear through the store. Most notably, tartan items. A pattern she is famous for. In fact my own handbag is tartan. The clothes also featured safety pins, rips and tears and razor blades
She has featured in Sex and the City quite a bit. Who can forget the moment that Carrie models for Vogue's bridal feature and the result is the Vivienne Westwood dress being sent to her? Although that bird/feather/blue headpiece was a bit shit! Apparently so the rumour goes, that Westwood was not impressed with the styling job Patricia Field was responsible for on the show. She left the premiere after 10 minutes with a lot to say about the 'frumpy' styling!!!!
i've blogged before about the wonderful array of new rubber shoes from Westwood which are a collaboration between Westwood and rubber designer Melissa. A wide variety of these shoes are available from BT2 on Grafton street for €130. (See below blog on the selection)
just gorgeous!
These are possibly the most famous shoes of all. Who can forget the amazing tumble Naomi Campbell took on these in 1994 while walking for Westwood? The image of Campbell falling while dressed in a pink boa and tartan skirt is one of my fav moments in fashion history. (And I do love my fashion myths and legends!) “She looked like a gazelle in slow motion,” Westwood said of the fall. It's true, she did a little. “She’s a very proud woman of course, and so when she got back stage she was so angry with me.'' - I'll say! Those shoes were apparently 9 inchs tall!!! Designed by Patrick Cox and Westwood. Man, I would p*&^%& off!!!!
For everything else alone, who else do you know who would attach a giant dildo to a shoe? Gives a whole new meaning to the expression - kick up the arse!
“I’m not one of those people who likes the ‘no make-up’ make-up look and things like that. I like artificial things and I think that’s what we are,” Westwood said. “I think civilization is artificial you know, otherwise we would just be still living in trees.”
Her famous pirate boots! Swoon.....

This is the designer's second retrospective. Her first being in 2004 at the V&A in London. But this is a way for Selfridges to help launch their new shoe rooms already being hailed as the biggest shoe rooms in the world. Along with the store's already sterling reputation and massive capacity, I am DYING to go. I mean come on! I'm the biggest shoe pervert going....I don't need an excuse to indulge my shoe obsession....
the designer is also an Aries. If that helps......
